I am a huge fan of the first season of "16 and Pregnant" on MTV. The title really covers all of what this show is about. Well the creators of "16 and Pregnant" have put their heads together to provide an inside view of what teen moms go through with their day-to-day lives in the new show "Teen Mom" on MTV, Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. I think this is the best way to give a true outlook to the audience, on all of the real hardships these teens go through. This show proves to young America being a parent is not all fun and games. This show should be a calling card to any young teen girls who only wish to have a child to keep their boyfriends with them. In general, a relationship will not always work just because there is a child involved. I think it is safe to say for most teens, a baby can have the power to destroy an already shaky relationship. Any teen wanting to have a baby, or having un-protected sex, should have to watch these shows. "Teen Mom" takes you into the world of 4 young mothers. So far, in the couple of episodes I have viewed, I have a very good idea of what is going on . . . and what will probably happen.

Written by Valerie Jones First we go into Maci's world. She was planning her wedding, but very soon realizes her boyfriend (after the last of many chances she gives for him to step up) will not “man up.” After a month of him being away from his family, his first night back, we see him out with his friends - living it up at a night club instead of being home with his family. So with this last straw she leaves him, taking their son and moving in with her parents. We next look into the life of young Farrah, who started out being a single mother. We see her try out for a modeling gig, working as a waitress, fighting almost non-stop with her mother and sister. Her family would like for Farrah to “grow up” and spend time with her daughter, instead of leaving the child with them to waste her time looking for love (dare I say it, ‘cause it is so cliché) in all the wrong places. Then we have Amber who is deeply struggling with being a bad relationship with her boyfriend, tiring to get back into high school, or get her GED, taking care of her daughter and to top it all off - having depression and anxiety that she has to take medication to treat. Last but not least, we have Catelynn. She was the one mother that put her daughter up for adoption. We look into her world and see the aftermath of this choice. She is still with her boyfriend and wants to marry him. She has support from friends, but not from family about the adoption. I personally think she made the right choice, as she could not give her daughter the life she would want for her and was truly not ready to be a mother. We see her struggle with missing her daughter, feeling some regret, not knowing how to deal with her emotions, and being upset about not seeing her daughter much or even knowing her last name. All of these girls have very real stories and are brave for showing them so publicly. I think this is an amazing show, and give it my personal two thumbs up. ------------------------ Valerie Jones is the Lead-Editor for NC GAL, a contributing writer, and a resident of Pitt County. |
