Ocracoke Beach

Hot weather, beaches, pools, cold drinks, and cookouts are only a few things that make summer spectacular. The season is also known for summer vacations. Potential vacationers might desire tropical climates such as Bermuda, Costa Rica, or even Cozumel. But they should know that they don’t have to go as far to get what they are looking for. Just off North Carolina's inland situated between the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean features our own local paradise.

Ocracoke Island resides as part of the North Carolina outerbanks; but in addition, it is its own little island in Hyde County. Measured atabout 9.6 square miles, it is only reached by sea or private plane. Three ferries travel back and forth to the island, departing from Swan Quarter, Cedar Island, and Hatteras daily. Ferries are controlled by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. To reserve your spot on a ferry this summer, call 1-800-BY-FERRY.

Ocracoke Island is home to around 800 residents on the island, otherwise referred to as ‘locals’. Their means of survival revolve around the success of their summer season. Ocracoke resembles a ghost town during the winter, so it is necessary for the locals to make their living between the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends to last them through the dead months.

Luckily, it is not difficult for the residents of Ocracoke to achieve their success. Vacationers travel from afar to see Dr. Beach’s #1 choice for best beach in the country last year for 2007. Ocracoke bears beautifully clean sand that travels far from the grass to the water. 4-wheel drive vehicles are allowed to drive directly onto the sand next to the water for easier access. Otherwise, pedestrians only have a short walk from the parking lots to their desired place of relaxation.

As far as lodging is concerned, Ocracoke provides many different options for visitors. They can rent houses, stay in hotels, or camp. If camping on the beach is appealing, the National Park Service prepared a campground near the ocean. No matter the level of luxury you desire, Ocracoke delivers. Just make sure you reserve your preference.

With everything being in close proximity to one another, there is a fluctuation between different types of transportation. There are plenty of cars producing heavy traffic near the Inlet, while many people choose to walk to their destinations. Bicycles are also widely used on Ocracoke. Several tourists opt to bring their own bicycle, but the opportunity to rent is advertised throughout the island.

Food is something to be desired on Ocracoke. There are numerous bars and restaurants ready to serve paying tourists. Among the crowd, the most popular award goes to Howard’s Pub. The interior walls of the restaurant are covered by popular beer logos strewn on neon and tin signs. The inside is spacious and there is also a large outside dining area on the second floor overlooking the island. The staff is very welcoming, and the food is amazing. Home to nearly 200 different types of beer, Howard’s Pub should be on any visitor’s itinerary.

Dating back centuries, Ocracoke also appeals to the history buff. The famous whitewashed Ocracoke lighthouse is part of the lighthouses tour in North Carolina, and still provides luminance to those approaching the shores. It was built in 1823 and towers over the island at 75 feet. Vacationers can also visit the British Cemetery, which rests and honors the bodies of the British soldiers washed up on the beach during World War II. These are only a couple of the many historical features on the island.

Ocracoke feels like another world even though it is only about 30 miles east of North Carolina's inland. The island presents a perfect vacation for all age groups looking for entertainment and relaxation. This little beauty will not disappoint. Try something a little closer this summer and support your local economy as well. Ocracoke Island is North Carolina’s own personal paradise.
